St Joseph’s Maori Girls’ College is a state-integrated, girls’ secondary school for Years 7 to 13 at 25 Osier Road, Taradale, Napier. It opened in 1867 and had 172 students on its roll at 1 September 2026.
Its home zone includes 20 suburbs in full and parts of 2 more, among them Waiohiki, Jervoistown, Awatoto, Pandora, Te Awa and Taradale; the zone map below shows the full boundary.
The school’s site describes a day and boarding school, principally but not only for Māori girls, where tikanga Māori and Catholic tikanga are part of everyday life, with a chapel decorated in tukutuku and kōwhaiwhai.
Boarders live in the school hostel, where Year 13 students have their own rooms and kitchen, and the site lists netball and hockey teams and shares recordings of the students’ waiata.

Stand-downs and suspensions
Cases per 1,000 students in 2025, adjusted for the ages of the school’s students, compared with all New Zealand schools.
Suspensions: fewer than 5 cases in 2025, so no rate is shown.
These measure how a school responds to behaviour, and schools set their own thresholds, so they are not a measure of how students behave.
What ERO found
The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Evaluation Report from February 2025. ERO found consistently strong senior results, with almost all students gaining NCEA Levels 1 and 2, and an orderly school where students feel they belong, respect its heritage and are supported to succeed as Māori through practices shaped by te ao Māori and the Catholic faith.
In Years 7 to 10, a large majority of students were at the expected level in maths but only a small majority in literacy, and achievement data was not yet used well to guide teaching.
Wellbeing data was not yet collected regularly, the school was not meeting the government’s regular attendance target, and the board was still building its understanding of its role.
The agreed next steps are to find and use strategies that lift attendance, give all staff professional learning in effective teaching, make assessment and moderation more consistent in Years 7 to 10 and use data to respond to each student, especially those at risk of falling behind, build a coherent schoolwide curriculum shaped by the community’s hopes, and train the board in its governance role.

Enrolling
The school’s main intake is at Year 9, with places at other year levels in the school and hostel as they come up. Families complete an enrolment application pack, which asks for documents including a baptismal certificate, and students are then invited to an interview and tour, with the hostel team joining for boarding enrolments.
Successful applicants receive a written offer of a place. The Ministry of Education lists a home zone for the college, but its own enrolment pages do not explain how the zone is applied, so families should check with the school office.
Enrolments open in Term 3 each year, and applications can be sent in up to three years ahead. Attendance dues are charged as a state-integrated Catholic school and are paid to the Diocese of Palmerston North, separate from school and hostel fees. The school publishes its current fees and enrolment pack on its enrolment pages.
