About Marewa North
Marewa North occupies the northern part of the Marewa suburb, which was laid out on land raised by the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake.
The uplift drained swampy ground and opened the flat site for housing that adopted the Art Deco style used in the central Napier rebuild. This created one of the largest concentrations of private Art Deco homes in New Zealand.
World War II slowed construction in the early 1940s. The government later acquired more land and finished the Marewa State Housing area by 1947. The suburb therefore contains a mix of 1930s private Art Deco houses, 1940s state houses and later infill. Marewa North retains many of the best-preserved examples and forms part of the city’s heritage walking routes.
The area supports a family-oriented community with local schools, Marewa Park and a small commercial strip. It lies within easy reach of central Napier amenities. The Art Deco Trust, established in 1985, promotes Marewa as part of guided and self-guided heritage tours that extend from the CBD.

Marewa Park serves as the main recreation space in the suburb. It hosts winter football for several clubs and summer cricket, athletics and marching events. The park provides grass tracks, wickets and greens for community use and remains a popular family destination.
