Napier Tides — Understanding the Local Tide Cycle

Napier’s tides follow a typical New Zealand semi-diurnal pattern — two high tides and two low tides each day, roughly 12.5 hours apart. The tidal range at Napier Port is moderate (around 1.5–2 metres typically, occasionally larger on spring tides), substantially less than the larger ranges of the South Island west coast or the inner harbours of Auckland and Wellington. The live tide chart above shows current and predicted tides at Napier Port.

Why Tides Matter in Napier

For Napier visitors and locals, the tide affects:

  • Rock fishing — the two hours either side of high tide are most productive for inshore species including kahawai and kingfish. Rock platforms become slippery and unsafe at the wrong tide combined with swell.
  • Boating and bar crossings — Napier Port operates year-round with deep-water access, but smaller-craft activity around the Ahuriri inner harbour mouth is tide-dependent and the bar can be problematic on outgoing tides combined with swell.
  • Estuary walking and birdwatchingAhuriri Estuary wading birds are most active at mid-tide when feeding flats are exposed; high tide pushes birds into the upper estuary.
  • Foreshore swimming — Marine Parade’s pebble beach changes character substantially with tide; Westshore Beach is best at mid-high tide.
  • Shellfish gathering — best collected at low tide; always check current MPI rules and rāhui notices for the area.
  • Surfing — Napier’s open-coast surf breaks (further north toward Bay View, or south at Awatoto) work on a tide-and-swell combination.
