About Bay View
Bay View sits on the coastal flats north of Napier. The settlement has a long history, with its earlier names Kai-arero and Petane still reflected in local features, and it was administered separately until the 1989 local government reforms incorporated it into the Napier City Council area.
The Bay View shoreline forms part of the long coastal stretch from Westshore north toward Tangoio, with public beach access at multiple points. The sealed Westshore to Bay View Coastal Path, a section of the wider Napier Rotary Pathway, runs along the coastline through Bay View and is suitable for walking and cycling.
Petane Domain is the local sports and recreation hub. This 10-hectare grassed area hosts clubs for bowls, soccer, rugby, tennis and cricket, and is also used for 7-a-side soccer and touch rugby in summer.
A war memorial in the form of gates stands in the north-east corner of the domain, and the Petane Playground provides facilities for families with younger children.
Bay View offers a quieter alternative to central Napier, with easy access to the coastal pathway network and the SH2 route north for day trips. The small commercial cluster along SH2 provides basic services including shops and takeaways.
Walking and Cycling
The Westshore to Bay View section of the Rotary Pathway provides a scenic sealed route along the coast between the two settlements. Walking both ways at a moderate pace takes roughly 40 minutes. This popular path attracts locals and visitors for relaxed outings and connects into the wider Rotary Pathway network around Napier.
