About Hospital Hill
Hospital Hill occupies the western slopes of Mataruahou, a limestone outcrop rising above Napier. The suburb avoided the worst impacts of the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake due to its location and geology, preserving a near-continuous record of residential architecture from the 1860s to the present day.
The area holds cultural significance for local Māori. Traditionally, Mataruahou was recognised as a place of healing because of its elevation, natural springs and sea breezes. Early Māori went to the western end of the hill when unwell, a pattern that the European hospital established in 1860 continued in a new form.
The Napier Botanical Gardens occupy the western slope between Spencer Road, Napier Terrace and the old cemetery. They feature mature trees, formal plantings and walking paths that connect with surrounding residential streets. The gardens form part of standard heritage walking routes on Mataruahou.
Hospital Hill remains a quiet, prestigious residential neighbourhood. Streets such as Wellesley Road and Cameron Road contain many surviving heritage houses alongside later development. The suburb sits within the Ahuriri Ward of Napier City.

Hospital Hill hosts several long-established schools with heritage buildings. Napier Central School provides co-educational primary education for Years 1–6. Napier Girls’ High School, opened in 1884, offers single-sex secondary education for Years 9–13. Sacred Heart College, founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions, is a state-integrated Catholic girls’ school for Years 9–13.
St John’s Anglican Cathedral stands near the base of the hill and adds to the heritage character. The continuous presence of 1860s-onwards housing distinguishes the suburb from areas more heavily rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake.
