About Pirimai North
Pirimai was one of the four post-1931 reclaimed-land suburbs in southern Napier. The land was previously part of the Te Whanganui-ā-Orotū lagoon, which was uplifted and drained by the earthquake.
Housing development began in 1961–62, later than the neighbouring Onekawa suburb to the north. The suburb follows a mid-century planned layout with a clear grid, generous sections and provision for local schools and recreation spaces.
Pirimai North contains the established residential streets on the northern side of the suburb. Residents benefit from immediate proximity to the Onekawa retail precinct and straightforward access to the Napier-Hastings Expressway for travel beyond the city. The southern portion of Pirimai shares the same residential character while sitting closer to Maraenui and southern Napier amenities.
Along with Onekawa, Tamatea and Pandora, Pirimai forms part of the southern Napier residential cluster that expanded through the 1950s and 1960s on post-earthquake reclaimed land. Each of these suburbs maintains its own local park, school catchment and street grid while sharing similar housing stock from the mid-twentieth century.
