What ERO found

The Education Review Office’s latest report on the school is a School Report from September 2025. ERO found that learners are confident in their culture, identity and language, with a deep grasp of mātauranga Māori, and that the curriculum is built around the local history and story of Maraenui.

Whānau take a genuine part in school life, and leaders and teachers keep a learning environment that grows students’ te reo and tikanga Māori.

ERO also found that improvement is needed: only a small majority of learners were at expected curriculum levels, fewer than half attended school regularly, and the school did not yet have a suitable plan to lift attendance or the rate of progress.

ERO raised concerns about the quality of education during the review and recommended that the Ministry of Education give the school tailored support with using achievement information and lifting achievement.

The priorities ERO set are a plan to improve attendance, targeted teacher development in pānui, tuhituhi and pāngarau, and more reliable achievement information to set goals and guide teaching for priority groups of learners.
