Onekawa Napier: Mid-Century Suburb on Reclaimed Land

Last updated October 2026

Onekawa is a residential suburb in southern Napier. The suburb occupies land that formed part of the Ahuriri Lagoon and surrounding swamp until the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake uplifted and drained the area.

Development began in the late 1940s after Napier City Council acquired the land from the Harbour Board and implemented the Napier Onekawa Scheme 1948. The result is a planned mid-century suburb featuring a grid street layout, established housing, local schools, Onekawa Park, and a significant retail and light-industrial precinct.

About Onekawa

Onekawa developed on land raised from the Ahuriri Lagoon by the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake. The Napier City Council purchased the area from the Harbour Board and planned the suburb through the Napier Onekawa Scheme 1948, with construction progressing through the 1950s and 1960s.

The name Onekawa translates as “salty soil” according to the New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

The suburb features a clear grid layout typical of mid-century planning, with established residential streets and a mix of housing stock. Onekawa forms part of the Onekawa-Tamatea Ward.

Onekawa contains a notable retail and light-industrial precinct that serves southern Napier residents. The suburb also supports community facilities including a marae and several schools. Its practical, mixed-use nature makes it primarily a place for living and local services rather than tourism.

Onekawa Park and Recreation

Onekawa Park covers 8.57 hectares and serves as the suburb’s main recreation space. Year-round swimming, summer tennis and winter netball are popular activities, with the Omni Gymnastic Centre also located on site. The park provides sports grounds and open space for local residents and clubs.

Retail and Commercial Areas

The Onekawa retail and light-industrial precinct includes supermarkets, trade businesses, car yards and a shopping centre on Maadi Road. This cluster draws customers from across southern Napier for everyday shopping and services. The precinct reflects the suburb’s role in supporting local trade and light industry alongside its residential function.

Education and Community Facilities

Onekawa is served by several primary schools including Onekawa School (Years 1–6), Henry Hill School (Years 1–6) and St Patrick’s School (Years 1–8, state-integrated Catholic). Secondary students typically attend William Colenso College.

Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Te Ara Hou provides Māori immersion education for Years 1–13. The suburb also hosts Pukemokimoki marae, affiliated with Ngāti Kahungunu and hapū Ngā Hau E Whā, featuring the wharenui Omio.
