Taradale Park and Centennial Park Napier: Sports Ground, Rose Garden and Playground

Last updated November 2026

Four clubs share one ground on Puketapu Road in the middle of Taradale, and a treed area set aside for quieter recreation runs off its western side.

Taradale Park is the home of the Taradale Sports Association, which brings together cricket, harriers, tennis and football, while Centennial Park, the western extension, is kept for passive recreation with trees, a rose garden and water features.

Napier City Council looks after the reserve and gives its Māori name as Te papa rēhia o Taradale. The central part of the park was the old Taradale Borough’s main ground for active recreation, and Centennial Park was added in 1958 as the borough’s centennial project. A playground, a skate bowl, toilets and changing rooms are also on the reserve.

About Taradale Park and Centennial Park

The central part of the reserve is given over to sport. The council lists the Taradale Cricket Club, Napier Harriers Club, Greendale Tennis Club and Taradale Association Football Club as members of the Taradale Sports Association, all based here. For cricket the ground has two senior wickets and seven junior wickets.

The association’s clubrooms sit on the northern side of the park, along with a sports pavilion that has toilets and changing rooms.

Centennial Park is the reserve’s western end and a different kind of space: the council describes it as a passive recreation area, planted with trees, with a rose garden and water features.

Taradale Library and its parking stand on land that was subdivided off Centennial Park onto a separate title. Taradale Kindergarten and the Taradale Friendship Centre are also on the reserve.

History of the Park

The land was first bought by the Taradale Borough Council, and the central part of the park became the borough’s principal ground for active recreation. In 1958 the borough marked its centennial by buying an adjoining block on the western side and adding it to the park. That addition is the area now known as Centennial Park.

Playground and Skate Bowl

The southern corner of the reserve, at the corner of Symons Lane and Puketapu Road, holds a large playground that the council describes as recently upgraded, with equipment for all ages, including a multi-combination unit, chain bridge, six high swings, a tube slide and a wave slide. A skate bowl sits beside it, and the Taradale shops are nearby.
