About Gleeson Park
Gleeson Park sits on Hospital Hill, the elevated residential ridge above the central city traditionally known as Mataruahou in te reo Māori. The playground was redeveloped by Napier City Council with a complete equipment refresh and is now open for play.
The design draws inspiration from Mataruahou, the substantial pā that historically occupied the hill, with mirrored surfaces that reflect the surrounding landscape and signage references to the hill’s Māori heritage.
The renewed equipment includes a carousel, a wheelchair-friendly trampoline, a see-saw and a rope climb, plus double slides, swings, climbing frames, balance play and a picnic bench or table.
