About Bluff Hill
Bluff Hill rises sharply from central Napier on the north-east side of Mataruahou, dropping in a steep cliff toward the Port of Napier. The wider hill complex was effectively a promontory or island-like feature in pre-European times amid lower-lying lagoon and swamp. The 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake uplifted surrounding land but caused comparatively little structural damage to the solid limestone hill itself.
The Bluff Hill Lookout sits at approximately 105 metres above sea level. On clear days the views extend from the Māhia Peninsula in the north across Napier Port and the central city to Cape Kidnappers in the south-east.
