About Perfume Point
Perfume Point is a small headland on the southern edge of the Ahuriri inner harbour, the historic port precinct on Napier’s northern edge. The freedom camping carpark sits at the waterfront, with views across the inner harbour to the Pandora Pond and the wider Ahuriri estuary. It’s one of the most scenic freedom camping spots in Napier — and much smaller than the central city options, with only 4 marked spaces.
The Ahuriri precinct itself is one of Napier’s most popular café and wine-bar areas — a short walk from Perfume Point gets you to the waterfront restaurants, the National Tobacco Company building (a 1932 Art Deco heritage building), and the substantial start of the Ahuriri Estuary cycleway / Iron Pot walkway.
Freedom Camping Rules
Perfume Point is subject to the standard Napier Freedom Camping Bylaw 2025 rules, in force from 1 July 2025:
- Self-contained vehicles only — current blue or green NZS5465:2001 sticker required
- 2-night maximum at this site per visit
- 10 nights total maximum freedom camping on Napier City Council land per rolling 30-day period
- $400 fine for non-compliance
- 4 marked spaces only — first come, first served
- No tents, no non-self-contained vehicles
With only 4 spaces, Perfume Point fills up quickly through summer and on weekends. Arrive early in the afternoon to secure a spot.
Walking and Cycling From Perfume Point
Perfume Point is one of the most convenient freedom camping spots for exploring the Ahuriri precinct on foot or by bike:
- Ahuriri Estuary to Iron Pot — 4 km loop walking/cycling track with substantial bird-viewing boardwalks
- Marine Parade Walkway — connects via the Pandora bridge to the central Napier 3 km coastal path
- Ahuriri cafés and restaurants — substantial walking distance away
- National Aquarium of New Zealand — 15-minute cycle south on the Marine Parade path
