Napier Hill walks trace the heritage residential streets across Mataruahou, the limestone outcrop that rises above central Napier. The hill has three named sections: Bluff Hill on the north-east (overlooking the port), Middle Hill in the centre, and Hospital Hill on the west (former site of the original Napier Hospital). The classic heritage trail across all three takes 2 to 2.5 hours, passing 1860s-onwards houses, gardens, Napier’s first cemetery, the Napier Botanical Gardens and a string of historic buildings, with detours possible to the Bluff Hill Lookout and the former Napier Prison.

About Mataruahou (Napier Hill)
Mataruahou is the official Māori name for the limestone outcrop that includes Bluff Hill, Middle Hill and Hospital Hill, formally adopted by the New Zealand Geographic Board. Before the 1931 Hawke’s Bay earthquake raised much of the surrounding land out of the sea, the hill was effectively an island connected to the mainland by a narrow neck. Early Māori associated the western end (now Hospital Hill) with healing, and the area was significant to Ahuriri Māori long before European settlement.
European settlement of the hill began in the 1850s and accelerated through the 1860s as Napier became the regional capital. Many of the houses still standing on the hill date from this period, giving the trail a near-unbroken record of New Zealand colonial residential architecture from the 1860s through to the post-1931 earthquake rebuild. The hill itself was largely spared the worst of the 1931 quake destruction that levelled central Napier, so the residential heritage survives in ways the central CBD does not.
The three sections of the hill have distinct characters. Bluff Hill on the north-east overlooks the Port of Napier, with the WWII gun-emplacement lookout and the most dramatic clifftop views. Middle Hill holds the densest concentration of 1860s and 1870s heritage houses. Hospital Hill on the west was the site of the original Napier Hospital (services transferred to Hastings in 1999) and now combines older residential streets with the Botanical Gardens and Napier Girls’ High School.
The Heritage Trail Highlights
The classic heritage walking trail covers landmarks across all three sections:
- Bluff Hill Lookout: 360-degree views over the Port of Napier, the city and the wider coast (optional detour)
- Old Napier Prison: New Zealand’s oldest prison building, now operating as a tour attraction
- Napier’s first cemetery: 1850s burial ground, on the hill
- Napier Botanical Gardens: established gardens with mature trees, on the western slope
- Napier Girls’ High School: opened 1884, a heritage school building
- Sacred Heart College: opened 1867, another heritage school on the hill
- St John’s Anglican Cathedral: prominent heritage church near the hill base
- Heritage houses: continuous 1860s-onwards residential architecture along the route
What Visitors Often Say
Reviewers consistently describe the Napier Hill heritage trail as one of the more rewarding urban heritage walks in New Zealand. The continuous 1860s-onwards residential architecture (preserved because the hill avoided the worst of the 1931 quake) gets specific mentions, alongside the Bluff Hill Lookout views, the old Napier Prison detour, and the contrast with the Art Deco rebuild of the central CBD below.
Common practical tips: pick up the printed Hawke’s Bay walks brochure or download the NCC Mataruahou trail map before starting (signage on the hill is light), wear comfortable shoes for the stair sections, allow at least 2.5 hours including the Bluff Hill Lookout detour, and time the walk for golden-hour light if photography matters to you. Combine with the Art Deco central-city walk for a full Napier heritage day.
