About Anderson Park

Anderson Park is the 36-hectare community park serving Taradale and the wider western Napier suburbs. The park combines open green space with a network of walking and cycling paths, mature trees providing shade, two ponds, model railway and model boat areas, and sports fields. The scale and the mix of features make it Napier’s most-used community park — equally good for a 30-minute toddler-playground visit, a couple-of-hours family day out, or a long weekend afternoon.

The park’s Destination Playground opened in July 2018 after substantial community fundraising and council investment. The layout includes accessible and imaginative structures for climbing and sliding, substantial flying foxes, swings, water-play features, and functional artwork with substantial messages in braille and substantial interactive elements (a xylophone, musical bridge and drums). The substantial design philosophy was inclusive play — equipment that works for kids of different abilities and ages. In October 2018 the playground won the NZRA 2018 Outstanding Park Award — substantial national recognition for the design quality.

Combine With Taradale

Anderson Park sits in the heart of Taradale — within walking distance of the Taradale shopping precinct and the cafés and restaurants on Gloucester Street. The substantial Rotary Pathway cycling network passes directly through the park, so it’s a natural stop on a Napier-to-Taradale or Mission Estate winery ride. Many visitors combine the playground with a Taradale café lunch or a short ride further on to one of the wineries.

What Visitors Often Say

Parents consistently rate Anderson Park as Napier’s best destination playground — the scale, the range of equipment for different ages and abilities, the inclusive design with braille and musical features, and the supporting facilities (toilets, picnic, parking) make it the go-to family park on weekends. The ponds and model railway add appeal beyond just the play equipment.

The most common practical tip is to come earlier in the day during summer weekends — the substantial playground gets busy from late morning onward. Bring water and snacks (or walk to the Taradale café strip 5 minutes away), and consider combining a visit with a cycle on the substantial Rotary Pathway that passes through the park. Parking is free and substantial — generally not a problem.
