Napier Weather and Climate — One of New Zealand’s Sunniest Cities

Napier has one of New Zealand’s sunniest and driest climates — a Mediterranean-style climate sheltered from the prevailing south-westerlies by the central North Island ranges and the Hawke’s Bay backcountry. The current Napier weather widget above shows live conditions. This page provides the wider climate context — long-term averages, seasonal patterns, and the significant weather hazards that shape life in the region.

Climate Summary

  • Annual rainfall: around 800 mm — much lower than west-coast NZ cities (Auckland ~1240 mm, Wellington ~1240 mm).
  • Summer temperatures: regularly above 22–24°C (December–February); occasional days into the 30s.
  • Winter temperatures: mild at sea level — daytime maximums typically 12–16°C; frosts rare in the central city.
  • Sunshine hours: among the highest in New Zealand, regularly over 2,200 hours/year.
  • Prevailing winds: westerlies through summer (sheltered by the inland ranges), southerlies bringing cooler winter weather and occasional showers.
  • Sea temperature: ranges from around 13°C in winter to 19–20°C in mid-summer.

Why Napier’s Climate Matters

The Mediterranean climate is the primary reason for the substantial Hawke’s Bay viticulture industry — the long warm dry summers and the fertile Heretaunga Plains silt-loam soils make the region one of New Zealand’s leading wine areas (particularly Bordeaux-style reds, Chardonnay and Syrah). The climate also supports extensive fruit and vegetable production across the wider region — apples, stonefruit, pip fruit, vegetables and squash for both domestic and export markets.

Weather Hazards

Napier’s most significant weather hazard is the occasional severe ex-tropical cyclone moving down from the tropics. Cyclone Gabrielle in February 2023 caused catastrophic flooding across Hawke’s Bay including the Esk Valley (north of Napier), the Pakowhai area, Eskdale and parts of Hastings — a reminder that the region is vulnerable to extreme rainfall events despite its overall dry climate. The Napier Port and central city were less affected than the surrounding rural areas, but the wider regional impact was substantial: lives lost, infrastructure destroyed, and reshaping of flood-protection planning across the region.

Other weather considerations include occasional summer heat events (high 30s) and the dry summer climate’s bushfire risk in the surrounding rural and forestry areas. Fire restrictions and total fire bans are common from December through March.
